Yep, Doc,"Monster of Dread End" is clearly one of the best (and most intense) stories in Stanley's horror canon. The set-up-- children being crushed to death by some mysterious unseen entity -- is disturbing, even with the gruesome results discreetly off-stage. When the monster actually shows up, and starts chasing our youthful protagonist, it's genuinely frightening. It could very easily have come off as anti-climctic or just plain silly, but for once Stanley's irrational logic-defying nightmare imagination hits the bullseye. The gory finale packs a punch, too, especially considering the time period.
