Does that mean a vampire with a "t" in his name couldn't write his name on his coffin because a "t" looks like a cross? We come across cross shaped items and architecture all the time, which would make a vampire's life very difficult.

I always felt that some sort of "gestalt" concept should be invoked.  I mean, anywhere you have tiled walls of floors you'd have, literally, thousands of lines crossing at right angles.  Does every one of those count as a cross?

To affect a vampire, a cross should be required to stand out from its background, and be easily perceived without close examination.  It would have to be distinguished by coloration or lighting or something.

Gleaming silver?  Okay.  Back-lit by the moon?  Okay.  On fire?  Okay.
A dagger held sideways?  That's pushing it.
Two sticks?  Lines in the dirt?  Two fingers??  Don't be ridiculous.
