I disagree that it was "brave" to kill off Hicks and Newt. What's the point of them surviving Aliens? It makes the finale of that movie a waste. Ripley goes through an hour of saving Newt and she is killed off before we can say goodbye? Thematic letdown - and a big reason why Alien 3 was a downer and was a failure.

If they wanted to kill them off, do it IN THE STORY, make it mean something - not just wipe them out in the first 10 minutes of the film.

Glad you got attached to the characters - sorry though!

Of course it's brave. By risking the displeasure of many, many viewers such as yourself who loved Newt from ALIENS and breaking the typical Hollywood stereotype, negative reviews be damned!  And it's very realistic -- such is life sometimes when people you love are taken, sadly, unfortunately, and tragically. Sometimes heroes don't make it.

But racking my brain here for other examples similar to what you're saying, I have found one where I can relate and was upset myself. It would be what happened in the first moments of HALLOWEEN RESURRECTION, with Jamie Lee Curtis... really destroyed the outcome of what I thought was a good finale for the series with HALLOWEEN H20.
