Uncle Bingo,

For me, killing Hicks and Newt was not only not stupid, it was creative and brave...

This is pretty much how I felt about it, with one addition. The death of Ripley is a final rest and a great end for such a great character. What was to be her fate, flying from planet to planet fighting Aliens? That sounds like a terrible life to wish on anyone. Jon's point about "How many times do we wanna watch the same movie?" is well taken. 3 is not perfect but the story arc is acceptable to me. 4 is just so unlike the rest of them that it feels like a spoof.
I agree with every word here. From the first time I saw ALIEN 3 in the theater, I liked that they were brave enough to kill off Newt. What an unexpected and alarming idea. I would have never thought anyone would break tradition like that, and it did give a  jolt to the proceedings. From that point, nobody was safe. I don't think ALIEN 3 is good, but it satisfies me too as a workable story arc, and I also felt the series should have ended here with Ripley's suicide.

ALIEN 4 is a dopey spoof, and I had no use for it. Just awful and unnecessary after 3.
