If I recall properly, Iwerks drew the bulk of this short single-handedly, and if this is the case, I'm not surprized he was given the control of his own animation studio a few short years later: but where Iwerks went wrong after splitting from ex-partner Disney is is open to question......
I think the fact that there was no Disney at Iwerk's new studio just Ub was the main factor. Disney was better at fleshing out the characters and making them work, so together you have the ideas of Disney and the talent of Iwerks, Oswald, and Mickey are both testament to that. I just recently saw the first two Mickey Mouse cartoons, and yes I am ashamed of myself for waiting so long, but I was truly amazed at how well the character worked right off the bat, and I also was amazed that Minnie Mouse was there from the beginning, I had always assumed that she was a later add on like Krypto the Superdog, or Robin the Boy Wonder.
Disney cartoons are all about character, while Ub's studio's cartoons were expertly crafted they just never had characters that the audience could identify with or really like.
