Doc should probably be played by an unknown...George Clooney, in a proper body suit, might be ideal -- he can certainly play period roles

Good point, Doc; Clooney would be good. But after his BATMAN experience, he might be reluctant to play a pulp or comic book-based character again. Prior to Batman, there was talk of Clooney for the Green Hornet, which obviously didn't come to pass. (Too bad, as I think he'd have been perfect for it.) I think Clooney was good as both Batman and Bruce Wayne, especially considering the material he had to work with. (The double DVD of BATMAN AND ROBIN gives some insight into Warner rushing/forcing the sequel, rather than allow the film to be properly developed. Basically, the studio seemed intent on making a feature-length toy commercial, so they could make merchandising deals, and the filmmakers were constantly being told to put more goodies & gadgets in that could be sold as toys.) The scenes with Clooney and Michael Gough at Alfred's sick bed were well done.
