I've never thought of it as blaxploitation, but just as a fun horror movie that happens to have a black leading man. It may have been retitled THE BLACK WEREWOLF for video, but that wasn't the original title, was it?

It was retitled THE BLACK WEREWOLF for home video in the Eighties, but that was certainly not its original title. In fact, the part of Newcliffe was initially written for Robert Quarry (yes, Yorga himself!), but it was decided to use Calvin Lockhart instead. (And I believe Shirley Bassey was an early consideration to play his wife, before Marlene Clark was brought on board. The actress ended up being dubbed by Annie Ross, who played Liza in Hammer's STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING.)
