I agree on THE MUSIC BOX. It is always brought up as their best short and it HAS to be because of the award. I would have given the Oscar to CHICKENS COME HOME. Try watching that without laughing! Things like THE MUSIC BOX, BERTH MARKS and that one where most of the film is Ollie trying to get Stan's boot off are studies in frustration and that are not my favorite L&H subject.
By the way, has anyone seen the twice as long Spanish Version of that?
It has one of the most amazing things I have EVER seen. My jaw actually did drop when I saw the indescribable Egyptian Regurgitating Man!!! Believe me it is a Wtf moment. That magician is really good, too.
As I am watching these in production order, I am getting to see how they re-use bits from the silent era later in the sound era. Most of the time the sound bits are better and improved on the second go. That was Stanley re-thinking them, I am sure.
However, I LOVE the silent films and I love most of the Talkies but I can't make a statement like "I like the silents better". I love the pure pantomime of the silents, and never missed the aural antics of the boys for a second.
That being said, the sound of Stanley whining and crying is one of the funniest sounds ever heard on film.
In fact, I don’t even know why we have to make the distinction and separate the silents from the talkies. Except for the sad later films, I tend to enjoy the ones no matter what year they came out.
By the way, I also do not like the organ scores.
