Even with the 9 minutes in the laserdiscy quality of Toho's R2 it should be an experience far exceeding either DVD. A little color correction on the 9 minutes could help a bit. Let us know when and where it drops.
I'm afraid not much can be done about the 9 minutes of ugly footage. The purpose of the restoration is to take the two best quality sources, which are the Universal DVD and the Toho HDTV showing cobbled together from a Matsuri print and the R2, and to color correct the latter to match the former (which has better color) so that the only inconsistencies in quality appear during the R2 shots. No amount of remastering can save them, that's how bad they look. There is simply too much aliasing, artifacting, edge enhancement, etc. and even evidence of Toho splicing the Matsuri with a 1962 print within the same shot, resulting in lost frames and even more inconsistency. I'll leave these shots alone until I can find a superior source without splices, preferably a print. I don't care if it's faded or scratchy, at least something can be done about those problems unlike the digital issues on the R2.
