As someone who comped much of Jaws 3-D which had some of the worst traveling matte work in any film ever and many shots in Superman IV don't I get a mention? Oh … there are always reasons for why things headed south on effects shots but bad is bad. Even if they're pretty good as in the first, and to my mind the best by far, Star Wars there can be factors outside of their control screwing things up. In the early 1980s the newer  print stocks (I think it was 5383 but maybe Jim Aupperle remembers better than I) were reformulated with much lower contrast (it was the style) and all the videos were transferred with very low contrast so that's why the  the garbage mattes were suddenly quite visible.
