The "weapons platform"?
The four satellites we see orbiting Earth after the famous jump cut were originally intended to be nuclear weapons platforms -- an idea that was eventually discarded from the film, but showed up in Arthur Clarke’s novel. Wikipedia discusses the topic at some length.

. . . Apropos of nothing, I was reading Stefanie Powers' autobiography today at work during lunch and she claims that she was the first voice of HAL before being replaced by one of the Nigels, Green or Davenport (I can't remember right now and I don't have the book with me), before Douglas Rain became the voice we know today.
At first, the Discovery’s onboard computer was to have been named Athena, with a female voice and personality. Never heard about Stefanie Powers being considered for the voice, though.

In the sequel 2010, the voice of computer SAL 9000 was performed by Candice Bergen, pseudonymously credited as “Olga Mallsnerd.”
