Just watched the blu-ray. Wonderful film. It has been perhaps a couple of decades since I last saw it, and some of the special effects, Earth for example, did appear a bit dated.

1. I haven't changed my mind about its take on evolution, but let's not go there again.

2. One question I had--HAL eliminated the crew because they would jeopardize the mission. After the crew was dead, who was going to do the mission? Was he just that nuts?

3. A technical question--In the moon scene with the monolith, the men recoiled from the sound. Could they hear a sound on the moon? Does anyone know? I would think not because there is no atmosphere, but there must be some way this could happen that I don't know about.

*I have had a chance to read a few reviews, and one point of view amused me. A critic said that the "apemen" in 2001 did not win a makeup Academy Award because most viewers were unaware that it was makeup. If these weren't actors, what were they supposed to be and where does he think they came from? Even for us Packer fans from Wisconsin these guys were a bit primitive.
