"Who says the apeman became "another" animal after the monoliths intervention?"

I do. If it could have used the weapon without the intervention, why the intervention?

"animal husbandry"

When do they use breeding to effect human development? Or DNA splicing, or anything like that. No biological basis of their intervention is presented. It is mystical.

Human manipulation of animals has been done within evolution. Actually all of evolution is driven by other species. Prey responds to the evolution of the predators. Predators respond to the evolution of their prey. Wolves learned to hunt in packs because they had to.

I think there is a massive difference with the aliens of 2001. They intervene to jump evolution, and move man to the next plane, as one poster put it.

It would seem to me that every evolutionary step forward allowed interbreeding or it would have been a dead end.
