I need to see this one again. I caught it in a theater when I was probably too young to judge it fairly --- loved the ape stuff and thought the visuals were fantastic (although having seen the Canadian short Universe I wasn't totally unprepared) but about halfway through my interest flagged and I literally fell asleep. What turned me off about the movie was the arrogance of its fans, who seemed to think that praising the film was a sign of their own lofty intellect. "If you didn't like it it's because you're not smart enough to understand it," was a phrase I heard over and over, usually from people who weren't all that bright themselves. Which I guess isn't Kubrick's fault, although I vaguely recall him offering a similar sentiment himself.

Bradbury, by the way, seems to have done a 180 on this film. When it came out he didn't care for it, calling it banal. Now he's a big fan. Maybe he got smarter.
