It was pretty funny; it was actually more funny than that.  Beverly and I went today and had a great time.  We didn't stick around to say hi to Danny because the audience looked like it was largely Friends, Family and Parishoners; we thought we'd be intrusive.  But we did like it.  Makes me want to figure out how to find listings for little theaters like this (some of which don't actually have their own physical theater) in the Los Angeles area.  Also made me think of  a couple of anecdotes (everything makes me think of a couple of anecdotes) that Danny Simon, Neil's brother, also a writer, told about himself.  He got into an argument with someone else on the writing staff of whatever show he was working on at the time.  The other guy said "You're not the funniest writer in this room, Danny.  You're not even the funniest writer in your family."  He and Neil paid for their mother's retirement to Florida; when Danny visited her, she introduced him to her friends as "This is my son Danny, you know, Neil Simon's brother."
According to Wikipedia, Lewis and Clark, the bickering comedy team who were the Sunshine Boys, were inspired by what Simon knew about  Smith and Dale always got along.  The animosity was probably inspired by Gallagher and Shean, who didn't.  (Al Shean was the Marx Brothers' uncle.)   Some say Lewis and Clark were sort of based on Weber and Fields.
