Even if you only buy the region free player just for the Laurel & Hardy set it is worth doing. There's an awful lot of material in that box...but why would you not take advantage of owning the region free player and not pick up other titles not available in the US?
In all the years I have collected DVD, the Laurel & Hardy UK Set is the only non-R1 release that I have really wanted or needed. If anything breaks me into going region free, this will be it. Anything else that was first introduced in other regions which I've ever desired has always ultimately become available in the US too.

Also, right now money's kind of tight, though I could swing something like $135 for an Insignia player, I guess.

You're gonna let this incredibledeal slip by because or a slim rumor? How many rumors haven't panned out through the years? I've lost count. Even if a US Laurel & Hardy set does come to fruition I'd be surprised if it was as nearly complete as the UK set is. You are going to end up kicking yourself for NOT getting the Region 2 set when it was under $40. It will probably become OOP soon and you will see the price rise substantually after that. Why risk being sorry over a mesly 40 bucks? Just sayin'...

Believe me, I'm still thinking about it.
But it's not just the rumor that's holding me back; as I've said, I don't want to replace my current Blu-ray player with the Insignia thing, and I don't want more connections and multiple players hooked up in my modest living room for the sake of just Stan and Ollie (no offense to the "boys" there).
