G. Vallejo,

I, too, loved ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU. I first read it when I was--ten? twelve?--and it was a great introduction to 'older' books for a little kid, because I flew through it. I still recommend it to teens I'm trying to encourage to read more widely.

FRANKENSTEIN seems to disappoint many people, but I loved it both time I read it, one in the last few years. I enjoyed the Arctic scenes, and as I noted elsewhere, what I found startling was how much of the book takes place in daylight, and how effective it is for that. I'm a big fan of 'daylit horror' but this was more ruminative, more about life and death. The horror is mostly in the conception, so to speak, not as much in scary scenes.

Dr Acula,

"Young Goodman Brown" is perhaps my favorite horror story ever (it seems to alternate with "The Ash Tree," "The Jar," "Tight Little Stitches..." and a couple others).  I reread both The Odyssey and The Illiad last year, and prefer The Odyssey by a mile.
