My mother made the most wonderful pies, with a crust that was buttery flaky. I remember she would ask me what kind of pie I wanted, and that was what she made for after dinner. My favorites were apple and cherry--with a beautiful lattice crust.

I don't eat meat and I remember my mother would make soup with a kind of matzoh ball in it. I say "kind of" because, to this day I will swear that it contained marrow. I do remember her working with some sort of bones---and the next thing you knew, there was this soup. True, the bones probably were part of the soup stock, but I think somehow the marrow was added to the matzoh-ish balls. What makes me suspicious is that I would ask if there was "meat " in them, my mother would say "no" and then, instantly, my grandmother would say something to mom in German. When German was spoken, it was a sure sign that something was being said that I shouldn't know. I was able to get the basic idea of the conversation at the time, and I had the feeling that mom knew that I wouldn't eat if I knew the truth (she was right; I wouldn't). Maybe somebody around here knows if there is some sort of soup-matzoh-ish ball, which contains marrow.
