It always strikes me as sour grape when people talk about how bad a missing film is.
Maybe, but it works two ways. There are people who feel Chaney and Browning walked on water, so it had to be a classic.

I enjoy Chaney, I realize and respect his contribution to the genre, but IMO he is was also a bit broad and "Victorian" at times.
