After signing with MGM, Chaney's most profitable film was TELL IT TO THE MARINES ($664k profit), followed by PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, both of which are tied for 2nd with a profit of $540k. LAUGH CLOWN LAUGH, MR. WU and WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS round out the top 5. THE UNKNOWN, the best of the Chaney/Browning collaborations (insofar as we know), came in 8th place, making less money than THE BIG CITY and the 1930 THE UNHOLY THREE.

Fair enough then, I stand corrected.  Apparently then London After Midnight was the second highest money maker of Chaney's career and a tie with Phantom Of The Opera as far as box office grosses.  Still nothing to sniff at and quite an achievement..

I'm pretty darn neutral on the matter and will reserve judgement when or if the thing is ever found and I can see it to judge for myself.  Even then I'll put into consideration personal taste.  It is just tiring to hear all the people that say "It ain't so great" who haven't seen it.  They say it because they can I suppose until someone can "Prove me wrong", which they are laying odds people won't be able to do.

If we are to dismiss the stupid public for liking London After Midnight and making it a hit, we have to remember it is the same public that tied it at the box office with Phantom Of The Opera, which at least makes it sound very positive to me.
