I'm watching this for the first time as I type this (I have it on while I have something else to do), and I have to say this--it sure ain't dull! I wish the composer copied more than just "Princess Leia's Theme" but this has got to be one of the busiest films of its kind I've seen.

I know it's categorized as a STAR WARS riff, but visually it seems equal parts that and FLASH GORDON (which came out later).

Reading this thread, I want to see LEGEND OF 8 SAMURAI.

P.S. I enjoyed this, the pace and sheer amount of effects and action were very entertaining.  When you take STAR WARS out of the genre, the quality standards of space opera films are on par with this--it's just too pricey to have Lucas or Kubrick standards, so the moviemakers sacrifice quality for quantity.  These are junky movies about junky subject matter, and the shabbiness is part of the ambiance of the genre.  There just aren't very many space operas that are up to the highest technical standards the way, say, action-scifi movies are on average.  The alternative would be to increase the budgets but the sheer scope of these movies would make that riskier, so the choice is scale down, or keep the size and accept the budget constraints and just enjoy the pleasures of pacing and color.

Fun stuff.  There's something undeniably enjoyable about a galleon flying through space, and there's no genre that can give such goofy pleasures.
