I wanted to see something spooky but not violent a few weeks ago, and grabbed this off my DVD shelf. As soon as I put it on i settled into it. It's not a horror film, it's a ghost story in the traditional sense. It's slow without being boring, and I just love the tone of it. Genuinely atmospheric and eerie. I'd like to read the reasons why the above posters didn't like the ending, as I thought it quite appropriate.

It's very much in the Lewton tradition without being explicitly of Lewton's style--it's about the psychology of the characters being impacted by the spiritual world as it is about the horrors. I love any movie with believable old haunted houses, too.
