PIB, it's the most pretentious version, and some folks like that. (Not a slap at you, Jack; but at some of the snobbier folks PIB mentioned.)  

"the 1931 version ... whatever its rep was in previous decades, it is certainly considered the best today"

It probably wins the percentage wars, Joe; but it's far from unanimous. As seen at genre fan threads here, at UMA, and elsewhere, the Palance, Tracy, and Barrymore versions all get a respectable number of votes.
