I could re-read this thread all day. I'm sick of hearing about the 1941 version and how it's a "masterpiece" that I'm ''supposed'' to like just because Tracy's makeup is minimal. I'll take the Mamoulian/March version anyday! One of my favorite films of any genre.


That's funny, I find the 1941 version to be generally unappreciated among film scholars. Most rave about Mamoulian's "groundbreaking" technique in the '31 film. Personally, I think there's way more substance in the Tracy film (and better performances all around), but I'm admittedly in the minority.
