Faking an English accent... or, I suppose, Scottish or Aussie... seems like a fairly common nutbar thing to do when you're dissatisfied with who you really are.

When I was a kid, my dad used to say, "Oh, are you English?" "No, just affected."

Apparently Eddie "Saucer Men" Cahn was like that. Bob Burns, who actually dealt with him, always refers to him as "English," but Cahn was born in Brooklyn, raised in the US.  I think the only time he was in England was a drunken month with John Huston in 1934 (there's a mention of this in the Huston bio.)
