BTW, "sci-fi fandom" doesn't come off so hot in that TIMES article. The article (falsely) makes it sound like FGW was one of the top fiction writers and a popular guy; a casual reader of the article probably will ask him/herself, "Why didn't even ONE of his friends and fans try to get some help for him? I guess all these sci-fi geeks are a bunch of losers." That's what I'd think if I read that the best and most popular person in [whatever field] was a two-legged disaster area but nobody lifted a finger to get him help.
