That's the only way in which I was familiar with him, too.
His name was seen here and there in a fair amount of small-press mags (and some fanzines). I knew his name, and associated it with Willum Pugmire insofar as both contributed to a variety of "little" publications (this was back in the 70s or 80s, I think). Didn't really know anything about his imdb controversy until I read about it here.

Weaver: WAS he actually any of these things? To me he sounds like the writing world's most dismal flop. But I know nnnnothing about sci-fi literature; as much as I enjoy sci-fi movies, when I want to read a novel, all this "Space helmet ON, Captain Video!" stuff is the last thing I want. 

I do hope your comment was intended as a joke, because if it wasn't, it sure does reflect a ridiculously insular and uneducated view of that genre's literature.
