I don't think he was desperate to break into movies, but I doubt that it was his experiences with U-I that had a dampening effect on whatever desire he did have--I think it was John Huston and MOBY DICK that did that.  I still do not consider $300 a week in the early 1950s to be "paltry;" nor do I think Bradbury did.
