I don't want to bog things down in the political stuff, but one thing I know about the HUAC hearings - something almost everyone on earth knows - is that the people who have become the heroes of it are the ones who refused to say ANYTHING. The problem with that is, anyone who answered ANY kind of question, no matter what it was, can get labels stuck on them like "They named names" and "They ratted ( ) out." So it becomes a label that can stick to one of them forever, or as Tom Weaver says, a kind of witch hunt. There's no need to explain the huge, huge irony there. So even though I know nothing about Alland at those hearings, whenever I hear how someone at them was such a traitor, I automatically wonder whether the person saying it has all the right information. When it comes to those hearings, there's evidently more than one kind of blacklist!
