One can be much aware of an author and his works, and wanting to emulate that author, without ever having read any of those works.

I am a big fan of Joseph Campbell, mostly from watching those old PBS interviews with him. And I'm quite aware of the ideas Campbell put forth in his book. And "follow your bliss" happens to be one of my favorite and most often cited mottos.

But, maybe sad to say, I've never actually read anything that Campbell has written.

To be fair to Bradbury, in that letter he only seems to suggest that he admired Orwell. I don't see anywhere in that missive where he said he'd every actually read Orwell.
