I'd further suspect that making the lead character an astronomer-- even, as it is, an amateur one-- should probably be credited to Alland... since that's exactly what the lead character, "Professor Pierson," is in the legendary War of the Worlds broadcast-- a character who is cool and analytical at first, then more drawn into poetic emotion as the story progresses.  That's not an H.G. Wells character, it's more due to Koch, Welles, Houseman & Co., and could not have been very far from Alland's mind, since he'd been part of the Mercury Theater since its inception.
