Question for all the sci-fi-hepcats here-- was IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE ever called "The Meteor," as Ray Bradbury has often claimed, and continues to claim? I don't have my KWTS handy. I seem to recall nothing of the kind in there, but memory can be funky. Terry Pace recently mentioned on facebook that Bradbury insists his story was always called "The Meteor," but that the producers (the usual Philistines) wanted to call it THE ATOMIC MONSTER.

I don't buy the ATOMIC MONSTER angle for a moment, considering 1) there's no atoms in the story 2) the title was already in use, on Realart's reissue of MAN MADE MONSTER, which was subject to a little legal action (cast of characters: Jack Broder,Ed Wood, Alex Gordon and Sam Arkoff and 3) William Alland was neither crass nor stupid.

And another thing. Who came up with the idea? I know everyone wants to drop the credit in Bradbury's lap, but the interview I did with Alland (or at least was present for) makes me think it was his notion; he hired Bradbury, discussed the salient points, and Bradbury wrote his 100 page treatment. (Or two, or three). That makes far more sense that imaginng Alland called Bradbury out of the blue and said, "Got any neat ideas for a 90 minute feature film?" That's just not the way movie scripts originate. Either somebody does the whole thing on spec and shops it... or (far more often) somebody (a producer, a director, an actor, or whatever) gets a notion, works with an honest-to-god writer, and voila.
