Dino De Laurentiis doesn't have much to do with that aspect of the films he produced; the list of those films is extremely long, and includes movies as different as NIGHTS OF CABIRIA and DANGER: DIABOLIK.
Well, I was thinking of his famous quote regarding his version of KING KONG (which was released the year before Orca). The quote went something like "When-a people see my monkey, everybody going to cry." In other words, according to the man himself, he was going for tears. The opening scenes in Orca are definitely over-the-top in that respect.

But yes, I understand that he's the producer and not the writer/director.
