Pop plagiarist Roy Lichtenstein, with his giant comic book panels complete with sound effects, was probably a more direct influence.
Fixed it for you.

I always wondered if Irv Novick or any of the other comic books artists Lichtenstein plundered had any legal recourse?

Irv Novick, no.  Walt Disney, yes.  Lichtenstein's least seen work is a Donald Duck he painted.  Walt's lawyers promised him if he ever did it again he would become intimately familiar with the interior of every courthouse on the Eastern seaboard. (Full disclosure:  That phrase is not original w/me; I cribbed it from an article I read on the matter but whose title & author I've forgotten.)
