Yes, I would trust the director and/or the screenwriter over the PR department any day. But the ultimate source for assessing/interpreting a film must be the film itself, whatever the filmmakers said about it. This doesn't mean casually dismissing the filmmaker's stated intent, which can help inform our opinion; however, as a general rule we should "Trust the art, not the artist."
