Well, the making of films back then (KING KONG) was not well documented (and what was released was confusing or meant to confuse people, according to the Kong documentary). I met Honda on several occasions and he isn't that type at all, per your comments on Cooper, and so say many of the people who worked with him. So, I take him at his word. Now, Publicity Departments made crap up all of the time. Even if they are "official", they are sometimes wildly erratic and dead wrong. For decades, Toho rendered Ishiro Honda's given name as "Inoshiro", which is wrong. For MOTHRA, Toho was calling the "Shobijin" (or "Little Beauties", as they are referred to in the film) as the "Ailenas" in the pre-release PR materials, even though this was an earlier draft name for them, which was long discarded. Even Columbia Pictures referred to them as the "Ailenas" in their Pressbook. And they are both wrong.
