We were talking about how Godzilla: King of the Monsters was cropped to 'scope when it was released in Japan.

But actually, I sometimes wondered what Return of Godzilla's true aspect ratio was. Godzilla 1985 was definitely released in America at 1.85, but some sources say Return of Godzilla was actually shot in 2.35:1 Panavision. However, the Japanese LDs, DVDs, Blurays, etc, are all 1.85, the dubbed British VHS is 1.85 and pretty much all Japanese films were shot in that ratio in the 80s and 90s so I think not. The word "Panavision" was in the credits because it was shot with Panavision cameras. It was like they almost made up for shooting everything in Cinemascope in the 60s and 70s. Kind of a shame actually as I love the composition of 'scope films way more and big monster movies are better served by that format, as Toho clearly figured out in the Millennium years.
