Yes, the intent of the human beings who are very influenced by their Martian heritage is to kill those who aren't--but that's not ethnic cleansing. It's not even racial cleansing, if for no other reason that these more-Martian-than-is-really-necessary human beings also kill all the dogs and cats they encounter. It's planetary cleansing, far broader than mere ethnic cleansing. I'm sure that Kneale was aware of groups in reality who target other groups, but I doubt that he was limiting it to mere ethnic discord.

Yes, that's what was in their minds, or what was left of their minds, but it was not merely "ethnic" cleansing. "Ethnic cleansing" has a fairly narrow definition. I suppose I could ask Kneale; I haven't written to him in a long time.
