I understand you don't want to lay out the details. I'm just a little surprised that an in-depth book would purposefully include misinformation, in the interest of catching people who plagiarize it. I never realized this was a common practice. Now I suspect I will read books while thinking "that's an interesting bit of info...if it's true."

Maybe I'm over sensitive about this, but I'm in a field where this sort of thing can and has ended careers. I guess I was just looking for some reassurance that it's not as bad as I'm imagining it.
