I'm thinking that they could've shot footage of a guy in a suit, then rotoscoped it with cel animation.

Just a thought, since there is other rotoscoped / cartoon cel animation in the film.  Most notably the birds in the Skull Island scenes.

In one of the KING KONG issues of FM (#25-28 IIRC) Forry reproduced a 2-page spread from some MECHANICS ILLUSTRATED type mag that had a LOT of misleading and fanciful info in it (which Forry pointed out as being highly inaccurate).  The spread correctly id'ed stop motion puppets for the dinosaurs, but claimed the scenes of Fay Wray and Kong together were achieved by printing the film of Wray and an actor in a monkey suit separately on photograph paper, cutting them out, then combining them on cells!
