When I watched the TV show as a kid, Noel Neill was the real Lois Lane.  Phyllis Coates was the pretender.  But now, from a slightly older vantage point, I can see that while Phyllis Coates is quite a fine actress, Noel Neill....is not.
But, if you don't require much in the way of acting, Neill still looks like Lois.  To me, anyway.
My feeling was just the opposite. I thought Coates looked more like Lois and while not a bad actress, had a cold, narrow approach to the part. Neill wasn't that pretty (ahe was more attractive in the serials, but still lacked the glamour look of comic book Lois), but had the warmer personality and was a good actress. Coates may have been more effective in the part if Lois' infatuation with Superman hadn't been eliminated from the television version. I never cared for Superman always addressing Lois as Miss Lane.
