He has wrought a terrible mess that really gave our Universal monsters a very bad black eye. Not to mention quite a bit of damage to their legacy.

Great BIG (and of course respectful) DISAGREEMENT with you, Herr Sknaggs. Whatever else the Sommers film was (and I think it was pretty darn good), not once did I think it to be a variant of the Karloff. It was a completely different film -- and whether or not it worked for you is a much different conversation

.... Reed
But Reed ... didn't you ever see interviews with Sommers saying how all of us old monsterkids who love the classic 30s and 40s Universal Monster Movies will appreciate VAN HELSING? I've seen him in between clips (maybe some of these were on those Legacy DVDs?). This guy claims he's a big fan of the old movies and that he did, in fact, intend to make his movie worthy of the old films!

Now, I must repeat that I have not seen VAN HELSING. So in keeping with my own rules I can't really have an opinion of it. However, I have seen many clips and "the making of", and Taraco's opening remarks make me recoil.  But I have seen that atrocious MUMMY of 1999 which may be more of tribute to Indiana Jones, but it ain't no Mummy to me. I felt that was a disgrace. With all the praises heaped upon it for being a "fine serial film", I seldom if ever hear anyone mention "the mummy" from it.
