I also think the design of the feet had something to do with the walk. If you look closely at the footage, you'll see the feet have square heels (which for me anyway, proves its a suit, since primates have rounded heels). I think the feet have flat soles (like clown shoes) that affected the gait of the actor inside

Thats how I feel also GPO, it's like wearing swim fins, you have to lift your leg a lot higher to keep the toe end from dragging and tripping you.
Altho the patterson suits feet aren't as long as flippers, you get the idea.
