I just find it odd that this old man would swear till the day he died that he was King Kong if there was not even the slightest bit of truth to it.

What's so odd about that? There are alot of people out there that believe that untruths are truths and will believe in them even on their death beds. Lets say you were fascinated by a certain actor to the point where you became obsessed. You then started going around telling everyone that you were a stunt double for that actor (even though you knew you weren't) in his various films.
As time goes on you're obsession could grow to the point that you will start to really believe in your assertions until it will seem real to you. It will get to the point where it consumes your mind. And even when you're near death it would have gotten to the point where you will still believe that you were that stunt double even though in reality that was never the case.

This Nigro guy probably went over this make believe story in his head over and over through the various decades until it got to the point where he fanatically believed it.

The Catch of the Day!
