No because if they did, we would have heard something about it in the years since the film was made by the people who worked on it.
 
Cooper hated the gimmick of the man in an ape suit (which had been used in pictures as far back as the 1920's), and never wanted to even contemplate using that effect.in his "giant terror gorilla picture". So its highly doubtful that would be the case.
I just find it odd that this old man would swear till the day he died that he was King Kong if there was not even the slightest bit of truth to it.
