I used to think that was an explosion (and scratched my head as to how THAT would fit into the movie), but then realized that (I guess) it's supposed to be an alien. All the Bradbury drafts, and the Harry Essex script, call for the aliens to be represented by big whirlwinds of smoke out of which, when they get right up to you, emerges some kind of eye. After the picture was finished, Universal decided, "No, we need a monster," and made one, and brought back some of the actors, and re-shot several of the meeting-the-monster scenes.
