I think Burton's very good in VIRGINIA WOOLF and in CAME IN FROM THE COLD (though that performance is mostly just being tired)
Burton's good as the exhausted, burnt-out alcoholic spy in THE SPY WHO CAME IN WITH THE COLD. Which is not to be confused with his exhausted, burnt-out alcoholic priest in THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA. Or his exhausted, burnt-out alcoholic priest in EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC. Or his exhausted, burnt-out alcoholic college professor in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? Or his exhausted, burnt-out alcoholic Bolshevik in THE ASSASSINATION OF LEON TROTSKY.

I can't remember if it's THE V.I.P.'s or THE COMEDIANS where he's especially awful. Those movies get all mixed-up together in my mind.

But I'm glad that Rick mentioned NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR... he's one of the many things in that movie that really worked, I think. So many people trash that film, but it impressed me, and Burton's role as Number 2 O'Brien is a big part of that.
