I think Burton's very good in VIRGINIA WOOLF and in CAME IN FROM THE COLD (though that performance is mostly just being tired), but I think his work in EQUUS is pretty ordinary. It's an incredible role and I've seen it done beautifully onstage by people nobody's ever heard of. I can imagine that Anthony Hopkins on Broadway must have been spectacular. Burton's performance is only an adequate sort of drone. You'd never know just how great that role is from his take on it. Not a terrible piece of acting, by any means, but not nearly what it ought to have been.
