Yes, Brando is some sort of Guru-ish guy in CANDY. It is Ewa, not Esa. And, yes again, she is unspeakably adorable.
I can't really disagree with Michael Weldon's take on Burton. I think his best performance was his last, or nearly, in
1984
. It's a very low-key but commanding job, very un-Burtonish. And much of his stuff, maybe most of it is real "eye-rolling" stuff. Watching his HAMLET is a pretty painful proposition. Even giving it some leeway for just being a filmed stage performance...and giving Burton credit that he wanted it hidden away and never seen again...still, it's a pretty darn dreadful sight. Indeed, in the whole production, only Hume Cronyn as Polonius gives a really good performance.
I have the feeling that Burton probably started out quite good, very promising. And then he just started 'doing Burton' instead of playing the character. And that's why his work in
1984
is such a pleasant surprise. He stopped being Burton, and played the part.
