I haven't read Southern's novel, but it helps (a little) if you really know Voltaire's Candide before you watch CANDY. In other words, box office poison.

Years ago in his Psychotronic 'zine (or maybe in one of his later books?), Weldon made an interesting argument about Burton-- the guy has done far more cringe-worthy, silly, and stupid films than he has done good ones. He's a decent enough actor, but he's been attached to soooo many bad movies and is responsible for soooo many eye-rolling performances that we should stop regarding him as a great thespian who made some bad choices but rather a hammy hack who had occasional moments of genius.
